After they were barely able to provide you with 1.5 mbit down, they are gonna do 7mbit? I will believe it when I see it. *waits for asspin to start bitchin in the channel, on a friday nite, about his download speeds not being up to spec* :p

At least they didn't tell me they needed to add more T1 lines this time. ;)
I actually only called them to see if I could get 3mbit, but they offered to upgrade me from 3mbit to 7mbit for free because i was bitchy. I figure with their huge overhead I should get around 750k down, though 7mbit is 896k.
For only $5 more a month, it will be a good deal.

Cable line here, 5 mbit down / 512 kbit up (680k down / 62k up) for $50 a month (I pay a bit less, discounted as I have cable tv from that provider, and it reduces the rate to like $43 a month I think)

Depends what country you are in really. Generally if you have at least 1.5 mbit, it would be called broadband, below that, is basically glorified (always on) dialup. :p

Cable here is 6mbit down and 512kbit up. DSL ranges from dialup speeds up to 7mbit down and 1mbit up. FiOS is also avaliable with 5mbit down and 2mbit up, ranging up to 30mbit down and 5mbit up. Prices range from $14.95 a month for basic DSL, to $45 a month for high speed cable, DSL or FiOS. The high end is high speed FiOS, running about $180 a month.

I'm on 2/256 here in the UK, works out at about $35-40 per month. Can't get any faster (uncapped) connections here for that kinda money.

well, technically since I live here at the college I don't know how fast my internet is...it usually sucks pretty bad, since i think 1000 people share 8Mbit...but in my home town 15 minutes away the town put in a whole fiber-optic system throughout the town to distribute cable, telephone service, and DSL. Residential speeds (like my parents have) start at 3Mbit down/512k up for $40/month. For here in Iowa that's pretty good. Also of note, only my home town has such speeds...you can't get anything much more than 1.5 from anywhere else around

Well I just ran home to pick something up and restarted my DSL modem. When I got back here to work, I checked the config file.

DSL Status:
DSL Mode: MMODE
Connection Status: Showtime
Speed (down/up): 7168 / 864 Kbps

Yay... 7mbit down!
Now in theory I can download at 896k/s. I will have to see how much the overhead takes out though.

sharing your net connection with the complex sucks... its free, but it sucks all the same:
Your download speed : 645 kbps or 80.6 KB/sec.
Your upload speed : 110 kbps or 13.8 KB/sec.
